UK: Carbon Risks in Investments Badly Managed |

A recent report commissioned by the WWF-World Wide Fund For Nature stated that the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 2,380 companies invested in by 118 equity funds in the United Kingdom exceeds 10 billion tons globally per year. The report, analysed by Trucost and Mercer, found that since the funds analyzed own approximately 1.4% of the total market capitalization of these companies, their ownership responsibilities amount to about 134 million tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2-e) emissions annually, or 22% of total UK GHG emissions.

A new fund, the Global Iman Fund, is set to give investors the opportunity to see their money grow based on their own personal beliefs. The new fund, launched by Global Prosperata Funds Inc, focuses on socially responsible investing. Vice-Global Prosperata Funds Inc President, Glenn Moore, was reported to have said, "In spite of the current financial situation in both developed and emerging economies, ethical funds similar to the Global Iman Fund have been impacted to a lesser degree than traditional financial markets,"

A common shortcoming, according to reports, is the failure to use sustainability reporting guidelines like those spelled out by the Global Reporting Initiative.

Ethical Funds in Canada key activities in 2008 has been to encourage the banking sector to adopt and disclose procedures for evaluating climate change-related credit risk in their commercial lending policies. In its 2008 Sustainable Investing Program Annual Report, the organization stated, “Canada’s major banks may not be large direct emitters of greenhouse gases, but because they provide capital to heavy industry they can play a vital role in combating climate change by encouraging their clients to tackle the issue.”
