An industry lobby report stated recently that India's chemical industry has undertaken the greatest number of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives during 2008-09. The study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) stated that out of three hundred Indian companies across eighteen broad sectors spending on social initiatives in the last fiscal year, seventy-four were from the chemical sector. In second place was the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector with sixty-two companies, while the textile sector came third with fifty-three. According to the report, community welfare accounted for twenty-one percent of the total CSR initiatives and was the top priority theme for corporate houses. The second preferred area was education, with a share of about 19.5 percent. The environment came in third, with about 17 percent. These were followed by healthcare. |
