China: CSR Ranking 2009 Released Print E-mail
Saturday, 26 September 2009
The China Corporate Social Responsibility Rank 2009 was formally released at a symposium in Beijing recently. The symposium, organized by the China CSR Research Centre, amongst others, ranked the top 100 companies for CSR. Fifteen cases of CSR best practices was also cited, together with fifteen cases of bad CSR practices.
Among the top 100 companies are the State Grid Corporation of China, China COSCO, Haier Group, Huaneng Group, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Telecom, Shenhua Group, Baidu.com and China Mingsheng Banare.

Haier's "One Gold Medal, One Olympic Hope School", State Grid's "Emergency Power Supply for Disaster Areas", China COSCO's "Environmentally-friendly Petroleum Saving Program" and China Aerospace Science & Industry Corp's Eight Major Responsibilities Programme were cited as good CSR practices. Meanwhile, the Sanlu Group melamine scandal and the Ciwujia Injection incident at the Wandashan Pharmaceutical Company were said to be examples of bad CSR practice.

According to a report from the China CSR Research Centre, there are still such problems as a lack of social responsibility and an inadequate understanding of the importance of CSR among Chinese enterprises. And out of a total of 10 million companies in China, no more than 100,000 have fulfilled their charity obligations or made any donations.
