South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. announced recently that it ranked as the 10th global company in tackling climate change, according to Yonhap news agency. Samsung's press release stated it was selected out of 500 FTSE companies to join the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI), ranking first in Asia and 10th out of 50 top global companies.
The 2008 index was announced at a global forum held by the Carbon
Disclosure Project (CDP). According to Samsung, the index is measured by assessing corporate policies
and activities companies engage in to respond to climate change. The CDP, founded in 2000, collects key climate change data from some
2,500 major corporations around the globe, constructing the largest
corporate greenhouse gas emissions database in the world.
In addition to its green business vision and strategies, Samsung is pushing for reducing greenhouse gas emissions
intensity normalized by sales from manufacturing facilities by 50
percent by 2013, compared with their 2008 levels.
According to Yonhap media, through the company's plan, which calls for 5.4 trillion won (some US$4.3
billion), Samsung envisions to become a global leader in eco-friendly
management by 2013. Starting this year, the company will also improve its energy efficiency by
40 percent for the next five years, reducing greenhouse gas emissions
from product use phase by 84 million tonnes.
