Malaysian Biotechnology Corp Sdn Bhd (Biotech Corp) says the National Biotechnology Plan (NBP) for capacity building is on track although work still needs to be done in providing a climate conducive to investment as well as developing human capital. Chief executive officer Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood said Biotech Corp had been focusing on how to improve the investment climate so foreign investors could work and benefit in the local environment. “As with any emerging industry, we've to scale up in terms of the developmental work,” he said. Iskandar was speaking at a press conference to outline the key trends in biotechnology and the significance of BioMalaysia 2007, an exhibition and conference to be held from Nov 27 to 30. Biotech Corp is an agency under the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry and since 2005 is the lead agency in the organisation of the annual BioMalaysia conference and exhibition. Launched in 2005, the NBP targets between 2008 and May 2010, to shore up public and private sector investment in biotechnology to RM6bil, develop 25 biotechnology companies and ensure the biotechnology industry contributes 2.5% to gross domestic product growth. There would be a continued push for maintaining sustainable investment in the industry given the uptrend in capital market activities and investor interest, both in the country and abroad, in biotechnology companies, Iskandar said.
