More businesses would sign on to the United Nations (UN) Global Compact once awareness on the initiative increases. Malaysia currently has 55 businesses and organisations as signatories of the Global Compact Local Network Malaysia since it was launched in August 2008.

The UN Global Compact, world's largest voluntary global corporate social responsibility (CSR), is a policy initiative for organisations committed to aligning their operations and strategies with 10 universally accepted principles in human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

By this, they can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that
benefit economies and societies everywhere. President of the Global Compact Local Network Malaysia, president Anthony Wong, was reported to have said, "In today's globalised economy, it makes good business sense for Malaysian companies to adopt high environmental and social standards to reduce costs and increase productivity and competitiveness."

Global Compact head of local networks, Soren Petersen, said the initiative is both a policy platform and a
practical framework for companies committed to sustainability and responsible business practice.
"It is a voluntary initiative that requires the endorsement of the chief executives, making it an entirely
self-driven effort by a company going for self-regulation towards public accountability, transparency and
disclosure," New York-based Petersen explained.

Launched in 2000, the initiative now has over 6,700 signatories, including over 5,200 businesses in more than 130 countries.
