The Malaysian government has pledged continued towards nonprofits to sustain and develop programmes to help marginalised and socially vulnerable groups. Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Chew Mei Fun, was reported to have said that the government welcomed corporations and NGOs to share their time, energy and expertise so that they could complement the government's efforts.
According to Chew, the ministry has been reported to have allocated special grants to nonprofits for their
programmes and activities, such as skills training, awareness and
advocacy programmes targeted at women, family and community
development. The target groups include women, family, children, disabled
persons, the elderly, the destitute, disaster victims and voluntary
welfare organisations, according to her.
Bernama reports that, as at October 2009, RM4.6 mill had been approved to 151 nonprofits to
implement programmes and activities at the grassroots level. Chew also urged corporations and nonprofits to take advantage of the RM100
million pledged by the government in the 2010 Budget to improve
corporate social responsibility programmes.
