Carey Island in Selangor will benefit from Sime Darby Plantations Sdn Bhd and KPMG Malaysia's new mangrove replanting programme. KPMG, an accounting giant, has contributed RM50,000 for the project as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. Sime Darby Plantations Managing Director, Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, was reported to have said that KPMG's financial contribution would be allocated towards constructing a 60-metre-long geo-tube and gabions structure.
At the cheque handover, Azhar was reported to have said that the structure would function as a wave breaker. He said, "The mangrove replanting asset that we have started in
Carey Island is actually part of our research and development centre
collaborative project with University Malaya."
Since 2003, Sime Darby has been working with University Malaya in research on the island's biodiversity, including propagation of mangrove species through biotechnological method.
