Trade unions must impress upon workers that they have to become more skilful, productive and knowledgeable in line with technological advancements and changes according to the Malaysian Human Resources Minister.
Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said trade unions must become more relevant to the changing world rather than hold on to the conventional idea of unionism. This was not in the minds of young workers.

"Very few workers now join the unions. This can be clearly seen as only about 800,000 out of the 11 million workers in the country are union members."

He said many workers in industries now chose not to be union members. This was the trend in other countries, both developed and developing.
