Public Bank and Bursa Malaysia On Top In Corporate Governance Print E-mail

Public Bank Bhd and Bursa Malaysia Bhd came in at the top for corporate governance in the new Malaysian Corporate Governance Index. The two organisations won the Overall Excellence Award of the Malaysian Corporate Governance Index 2009 for their achievements in the area.

The new Malaysian Corporate Governance Index, set to promote best practices in corporate governance among public-listed companies in Malaysia, also awarded Bursa Malaysia the Best Governance and Transparency Index Award.

Other awards went out to Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Sime Darby Bhd for the Best AGM Conducted in 2009. Distinction Awards went to British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd, CIMB Group Holdings Bhd, LPI Capital Bhd, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, Media Prima Bhd, PLUS Expressways Bhd, Sime Darby Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Tenaga Nasional Bhd

DiGi.Com Bhd was awarded the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Practices while LPI Capital Bhd for Most Timely Held AGM. Media Prima Bhd and Naim Holdings Bhd were picked as the Best Mid-Capitalisation Company, while Symphony House Bhd, Uchi Technology Bhd and Hai-O Enterprise Bhd were selected Best Small-Capitalisation Company.

The awards ceremony was organised by the Minority Shareholders Watchdog Group (MSWG) and hosted in conjunction with the unveiling of the list of 100 companies in the Malaysian Corporate Governance Index 2009 with 64.36 in total index.

The awards were presented by Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, and Securities Commission Managing Director Datuk Dr Nik Ramlah Mahmood.

Winners of the Merit Awards are Axiata Group Bhd, DiGi.Com Bhd, IJM Corporation Bhd, KNM Group Bhd, RHB Capital Bhd, Symphony House Bhd, Tanjong Public Limited Company and UMW Holdings Bhd.

Under a survey conducted by MSWG on 899 public-listed companies for the Malaysian Corporate Governance Index, 60.7 percent had achieved corporate governance score of more than 50 per cent. According to reports, this is an improvement over previous  years' performances.
