The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and the Arab Administrative Development Organization recently organized the first Arab Forum for Corporate Social Responsibility in April at the SCCI headquarters. The Forum is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. Themed “Arab and Foreign Experiences”, the event complements other previous events which have revealed the practical experiences of leading Arab countries in adopting social responsibility principles. Although considered a new concept in the Arab World, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has already become crucial in helping Arab companies project and promote a positive image throughout the regional business community. The event highlighted the experiences of participating Arab countries, and refered to high international standards such as national economic and social frameworks, current conditions within the Arab business community, and environmental issues and resource conservation. The three-day forum also had delegates discussing CSR and its relevance in light of the different challenges faced by the business community due to the global economic crisis. Delegates also reviewed the UAE’s establishment of partnerships for a sustainable future, Saudi’s promotion of social responsibility principles, ethical investments in Qatar, and related experiences of Lebanon, Syria, Oman, Bahrain, and Jordan. |
