SHEHRI Vice Chairperson, Dr Raza Gardezi, believes that multinational corporations (MNCs) in Pakistan are not fulfilling their corporate social responsibility (CSR). Furthermore, Dr Raza, speaking at a discussion on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in the context of Pakistan’s environment-What can the media do?”, was reported to have said that MNCs in Pakistan often confine themselves to earning money only. The event was organized by SHEHRI in collaboration with SOMO-Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations. Citing MAKRO, a Dutch company operating in Pakistan, as an example, Dr Raza claimed that Pakistani laws were violated through MAKRO's acquisition of 20,000 sq yards of a playground of Karachi Grammar School, and established its business there unlawfully. He was reported to have said that the Army Welfare Trust (AWT) sold the land to MAKRO for Rs300 million during the era of military dictator Gen. Ziaul Haq. This is notwithstanding the playground not being in the jurisdiction of Cantonment Board. Khadim Hussain Ansari of Badin Rural Development Society highlighted the highhandedness of another MNC, British Petroleum, in Badin district. Mr Khadim was reported to have said that the company was not only violating Petroleum Concession Agreement but also has damaged roads through excessive use of heavy vehicles. Shahid Lutfi, an environmental consultant, said though Pakistan Environmental Protection Act 1997 does exist companies often violates environmental rules and regulations. |
