Banks have been urged to include the environment as a criterion when evaluating loan applications from the private sector. In making the call, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said developers would then have to make sure that their projects do not have an adverse impact on the environment. He said such a move would help the country deal with climate change and global warming. "The banking industry can contribute to the environment by doing this. Every citizen should do his or her part, no matter how small it is," Azmi said after launching the Public Bank tree-planting campaign yesterday. Under the campaign, 20,000 trees will be planted over the next two years at the Seri Johor flood retention pond in Cheras here. Public Bank will spend RM1 million for the purchase, planting and maintenance of the trees. It is a collaborative effort between Public Bank Bhd, the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), the ministry and the Drainage and Irrigation Department.
